Finding Your Design Style (When You Like A Little Bit Of Everything)
Have you ever walked into a room and thought, “Wow, this feels like me!” — and then realized you have no idea how they pulled it all together? That “aha” feeling is what great design is all about, and it’s exactly what we aim to create for every client. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to stick to one style or trend to have a home that feels cohesive and intentional. In fact, most of us love a little bit of everything — and that’s what makes your home truly unique.
If you’ve ever stood in a store or scrolled through Pinterest thinking, “I love this modern sofa… but also that vintage cabinet… and that coastal rug,” — you’re not alone. Most people don’t have one single design style, and honestly, that’s a good thing. Your home should reflect you — not just one page out of a catalog.
As designers, we love helping clients figure out what their “style mix” really is. Sometimes it’s modern farmhouse with a hint of vintage. Other times it’s clean and contemporary but with the warmth of natural textures and a few well-loved pieces sprinkled in. The magic happens when all those elements start to feel cohesive — that’s when a house starts to really feel like home.
Here’s how we usually help clients narrow it down:
Start with how you want to feel in your home.
Before picking colors or furniture, think about mood. Do you want calm and airy? Warm and cozy? Bright and bold? Once you know that, you can start ruling out what doesn’t support that feeling.
Find your repeating patterns.
When you look at your saved pins or screenshots, what do you keep coming back to? That’s your clue. You might realize every space you love has natural wood tones, warm neutrals, or black metal accents — even if the styles differ.
Blend, don’t match.
Mixing styles works best when you repeat elements across the room — a color, a texture, or a shape that shows up more than once. Maybe your modern lighting ties in with your clean-lined sofa, while your vintage rug grounds everything with warmth and character.
4. Don’t rush it.
Some of the best spaces evolve over time. Collect pieces you truly love and edit as you go. Your home should tell your story — and stories don’t happen overnight.
One of my favorite projects was for a client who loved everything. We’re talking coastal blues, mid-century furniture, traditional rugs — all of it. Instead of choosing one look, we leaned into what she loved most about each. We mixed a light oak dining table with clean modern chairs, added a vintage-inspired rug, and tied it all together with coastal artwork that reminded her of her favorite vacation spot. It turned into one of the warmest, most personal spaces I’ve ever worked on.
If you’re trying to figure out your own style, here’s something fun to try: open Pinterest or Instagram and save 10–15 spaces that you absolutely love — no overthinking allowed. Then, take a step back and look at them all together. What do they have in common? Maybe you’re drawn to soft textures, natural woods, or pops of green. Maybe it’s cozy lighting or bold art. Whatever it is, that’s your style signature, and it’s the perfect place to start.
And here’s the thing: your design style doesn’t need a label. You don’t have to pick between “modern farmhouse” or “coastal transitional.” You can love a little of everything and still have a home that feels cohesive and intentional. What matters most is that it feels like you.
I always tell clients that great design is about connection — connecting your personality to your space in a way that feels natural and lived in. Over time, your home will evolve with you, and that’s the best part. It’s not about getting it “perfect,” it’s about creating something that feels right.
